Why We Reach for Witchy Romance When the Nights Get Longer

Sonia Rompoti, with silver-grey hair, writes in a notebook beside a witchy romance novel in a warm, candlelit room.

The darker the evenings get, the more I want magic, messy feelings, and a heroine who refuses to shrink.

Since Mum died in September, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want stories to do for me when life gets heavy. I don’t need a book to tidy up grief or hand me a shiny lesson with a bow on it. Please. I have enough real-life admin without my fiction assigning homework.

Sometimes I want a witch, a dangerous secret, a complicated man, and a heroine who can walk into a room and change the temperature. Give me the magic, the tension, the banter, and make her get the ending she wants.

That is one reason I reach for witchy romance books when November settles in. The nights get longer, the year starts asking what we are grateful for, and every shop window seems to be yelling about festive cheer before I’ve even emotionally located my gloves. A little fictional enchantment feels like excellent company.

I want magic with feelings attached

I love a spell that has consequences. Not because I want every heroine to suffer for sport, but because power is more interesting when it asks something of you. A witch can be fierce and still be frightened. She can know exactly how to protect everyone else and have no idea what to do when someone sees through her defenses. Relatable, frankly. We contain multitudes; some of them are just tired and would like a snack.

As a writer, I keep coming back to women who are allowed to be complicated. They can be soft and stubborn, generous and furious, desirable and entirely uninterested in making themselves smaller. In my Untamed Hearts of Rowan Grove series, Elara Rowan is a protection witch with a secret that makes her far more dangerous than the town (and Griffin Hale) expect. He arrives with an agenda. She has no intention of making his life easy. Naturally, the grove has other ideas.

That is the fun of a witchy romance: the magic can raise the stakes, but the emotional question is deliciously human. Will she trust him? Will he earn it? Will either of them stop pretending they are perfectly fine? I enjoy a supernatural threat, but I will always stay for two stubborn people having to tell the truth.

The romance is the comfort, not the cure

My day has plenty of real roles in it: I’m a solo mum, a partner, a mental-health professional, and a writer currently working on a new Yule book. I care about all of those things… but, seriously, I don’t want every story I read to turn into a checklist for becoming a better person.

Sometimes comfort is watching a heroine be chosen without having to perform, apologize for her body, or become convenient first. Sometimes it’s seeing someone meet her power with respect instead of trying to tame it. That kind of love story doesn’t erase the hard parts of life. It gives me a place to rest beside them for a while.

And because I write romance too, I’m nosy about the chemistry. I want the charged pause. The sharp comeback that lands a little too close to the truth. The moment one character realizes, oh no, I care what this person thinks. Keep your plot twists; I’m watching the eyes.

If you want a little magic on your nightstand

If you’re craving cozy belonging and a sweetly prickly romance, try The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. If you’d rather have a witty second-chance romance with a curse that has absolutely got out of hand, pick up The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling. PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books Hachette UK

And if you want a heroine with shapeshifting magic, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a curvy body that is never treated like an apology, Witch, Unleashed is the first book in my Untamed Hearts of Rowan Grove series. The direct edition includes bonus content: get Witch, Unleashed here. payhip.com

My November plan is not to become a candlelit goddess who has her life color-coded. I’m writing my Yule book, showing up for my people, and trying to leave behind the idea that rest has to be earned. I’m looking forward to the pages taking shape, and to the stories that make the dark feel a little less lonely.

So tell me: when the nights get longer, do you want your romance cozy, dangerous, or one emotionally catastrophic lesson away from both?

Frequently asked questions

What makes a romance book “witchy”?

Usually it blends a love story with witches, spells, magical communities, or supernatural stakes. The magic can be cozy, dangerous, funny, or all three; the relationship still needs chemistry and emotional payoff.

Are witchy romance books only for Halloween?

No. Halloween gives the genre an obvious seasonal moment, but readers can enjoy paranormal romance all year. November is especially good for stories with atmosphere, yearning, and a little escape from ordinary life.

What is Witch, Unleashed about?

It follows Elara Rowan, a powerful protection witch hiding a shapeshifting secret, and Griffin Hale, the man who returns to Rowan Grove with plans that put him directly in her path. Expect enemies-to-lovers tension, magic, and a guaranteed happy ending.

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
