The Map

On their tenth anniversary, she’d made him a map.

Not of a real place — of their relationship. She’d drawn it by hand, in the obsessive, particular way she had with projects she cared about: every significant place marked, the coffee shop where they’d had the conversation that changed things, the street corner where he’d first taken her hand, the hospital waiting room where they’d sat together through the longest night she could remember.

He’d studied it for a long time.

“There are things on here I’d forgotten,” Rin said quietly.

“I know. I hadn’t.”

He turned the map over. On the back she’d drawn the next section — blank, obviously, because it hadn’t happened yet — but she’d labeled the edges with coordinates that named what she hoped was ahead of them: *coast*, *more of the ordinary stuff*, *whatever comes next*, *here*.

“You drew the future part too,” he said.

“The outline of it. We fill it in as we go.”

He looked at the map for a long time, and she watched him do it, watching his face move through something she recognized as the particular emotion of being truly known. Not flattered. Known.

Memory, she thought, is one of the most intimate gifts you can give someone. Not just making the memories together, but carrying them. Being the person who remembers the coffee shop and the street corner and the hospital, who maps the whole journey and hands it back and says: here. Look. This is the place we made.

He carefully rolled the map up and held it like it was something rare.

“Let’s make the next part worth mapping,” he said.

✦  Today’s Reflection

If you were to map your relationship — all the places, conversations, moments that shaped it — what would be the landmarks? And what do you hope is still ahead on the map?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
