She came alive differently in Greek.
This was something Theo had understood slowly, over years, watching her navigate the two languages of her life. In English she was precise, competent, controlled — effective, the word she used for herself. In Greek she was louder, funnier, looser at the edges, someone with bigger gestures and faster laughter.
He didn’t speak Greek. This had felt, early on, like a mild sadness — the sense that there was a version of her he didn’t have full access to, a room in the house with a door he couldn’t open.
Then he’d realized he had access anyway.
He couldn’t understand the words, but he could hear the rhythm of her. He could see her face shift when she was on the phone with her mother, the way some muscle in her jaw unclenched. He could feel when a conversation at a family dinner shifted something in her that would take her twenty minutes to translate back to English, and he’d learned to wait for the translation without filling the space.
“It’s strange,” Eleni told him once, after a long weekend with her family, “that you can see me in both versions even if you only understand one.”
“I don’t need to understand the words,” he said. “I understand you.”
She looked at him for a long moment.
“The Greek version of me likes you a lot,” she said.
“The Greek version of you is less polite about it,” he said. “I like that one very much.”
She laughed — loud, unguarded, entirely herself — and he smiled because it was the laugh he’d fallen in love with first, the one she only brought to certain rooms.
✦ Today’s Reflection
Are there sides of yourself that come out differently in different contexts — and does your partner know all of them?
Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
