For readers who want desire, sharp dialogue, and a heroine whose happy ending doesn’t depend on becoming smaller.
There is a particular pleasure in opening a romance and discovering that the curvy woman gets to be the one everyone is looking at. She gets the charged conversation, the inconvenient attraction, and the man who loses his train of thought when she walks into the room. Nobody hands her a diet plan before chapter three.
If you’ve ever searched for a plus-size romance and found a story that treats the heroine’s body as a problem the hero generously overlooks, you’ll understand the difference.
Being tolerated is a miserable romantic fantasy. Most of us can obtain that experience at a family gathering without buying a book…. *ahem*
Let Her Be Wanted From the Beginning
For me, a satisfying curvy romance allows attraction to exist before the heroine has resolved every insecurity. She can have difficult days, complicated feelings about clothes, or a history of unkind comments. Desire doesn’t need to wait until she has completed a confidence course and collected her certificate… it is not something to earn or gain.
The hero’s attraction also deserves specificity. Perhaps he loves her boldness, the way she moves, or how she challenges him. Physical desire and interest in her personality can exist together. “He sees beyond her body” is a less appealing promise than “he wants her, and wants to know her.”
When choosing your next book, look at how the blurb introduces her. Does she have a job, a goal, a sense of humour, or a problem that has nothing to do with her weight? That is often a useful first clue about how much room the story gives her to be a person.
Give Her Something Else to Want
A heroine becomes more interesting when romance enters a life she is already trying to build. She might want professional recognition, a fresh start, revenge, or enough money to leave a terrible job. Attraction then creates a complication rather than supplying her entire reason to get out of bed.
This matters especially in billionaire romance. A wealthy hero has obvious power, so I want to know what the heroine brings into the relationship and what she refuses to surrender. Competence, judgment, ambition, and the ability to call him on his nonsense all make the dynamic more satisfying.
Try this question when reading a sample: “What would she be doing if he hadn’t appeared?” If you can answer it, you’ve probably met a heroine with somewhere to go. If the answer is “waiting to be selected,” I’d keep browsing. Your evening is valuable, and the laundry has already claimed enough of it.
Find Your Version of a Good Body Story
Readers want different things from representation. Some want a heroine who openly confronts body shaming. Others want a few hundred pages where her size is ordinary and her biggest concern is the dangerously attractive man making her life complicated.
Before searching, finish this sentence: “Tonight, I want a curvy heroine who…” You might choose “already knows she’s desirable,” “is learning to trust someone,” or “has bigger problems than fitting into a dress.” Use that preference alongside a trope: plus-size enemies to lovers, curvy billionaire romance, or body-positive romantic comedy.
Then check reviews for the details that matter to you. Search terms such as “body shaming,” “weight loss,” or “confident heroine” can help you discover whether a book includes material you would rather skip. A curvy character on the cover alone won’t tell you the tone of her story.
Three Books to Put on Your Radar
In my Curves to Own series, Sienna is a curvy event planner with professional ambitions and a sharp voice. Her attraction to Grayson Wolfe brings billionaire power, secrets, and serious complications into an already active life. If you want a heroine who enters the room with something to say, this is a place to start.
For two more options, try Spoiler Alert @oliviadade, which pairs a plus-size fanfiction writer and cosplayer with a television star, or Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert, whose chronically ill heroine recruits her neighbour to help her pursue a list of new experiences. They offer different flavours of contemporary romance, with women who have interests and lives beyond being desired.

The heroine can keep her curves. The billionaire can lose his composure.
Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
