For readers who want dangerous chemistry, ambitious heroines, and fewer apologies for taking up space.
He has questionable methods, excellent cheekbones, and a reputation that should make everyone leave the room. She has decided she’s finished being the reasonable one. Suddenly, your evening plans involve reading until one in the morning while insisting you’ll stop at the next chapter.
Come on, admit it: there’s something delicious about characters who complicate the story simply by wanting things… and refusing to ask politely. So, if you’re looking for your next romance, it helps to know which kind of trouble you enjoy.. who is YOUR favorite morally grey character?
Give Him a Conflict, Not Just a Black Shirt
For me, an interesting morally grey character has competing loyalties, decisions with consequences, and something that makes his choices understandable even when I disagree. Perhaps protecting one person means betraying another. Perhaps he values survival more than fairness. I want to see the tension between what he wants and what he’s prepared to do for her.
A tragic childhood can explain him, but it shouldn’t have to do every piece of character development. Likewise, being rude to a waiter and attractive to the heroine isn’t automatically moral complexity. Sometimes it’s simply a disappointing dinner.
When reading a sample, I notice what the story gives beyond his reputation. Does he make a difficult decision? Does another character challenge him? Is there a cost to his actions? You might enjoy a villainous love interest, an antihero, or a protective hero who occasionally crosses a line, but not one who is always rude to people around him.
Let Her Want Something Besides His Approval
Here’s where the witchy side of my reading tastes becomes relevant: I love a heroine with power she wants to understand, use, protect, or increase. Let her have a desire that survives the arrival of a handsome man. A home. Freedom. Knowledge. Revenge. A throne. An uninterrupted afternoon would also be a compelling quest.
Being “done being nice” doesn’t mean she has to become cruel or deliver a sarcastic speech in every scene. She can be generous and ambitious. She can love someone and disagree with him. What interests me is whether her choices influence the story, including choices that create problems she then has to face.
Choose Your Particular Flavour of Trouble
Before picking a book, finish this sentence: “Tonight, I want…” Maybe you want strategic rivals learning to trust each other. Maybe you want a heroine who makes alarming decisions and enjoys them. Maybe you want danger outside the relationship while the couple gradually becomes a refuge. All can involve morally complicated characters, but they won’t feel alike.
Look separately at relationship dynamics, violence, and sexual content. “Morally grey” doesn’t tell you how explicit the romance is or whether the hero’s threatening behaviour is directed towards the heroine. Check content notes and specific reviews for anything that changes your enjoyment. Choosing a darker book is easier when you know which darkness you actually wanted.
For unapologetic ambition, explore The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller, a YA fantasy romance whose heroine plans to pursue the Shadow King and take his throne. Choose it for scheming rather than assuming an adult spice level. For adult fantasy romance with a human heroine navigating a deadly vampire tournament, try The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent.
