The Birthday He Remembered Wrong

He’d gotten her birthday wrong for the first two years.

Not wrong exactly — he had the date right. What he’d gotten wrong was what she actually wanted. The first year: a surprise party, well-intentioned, immediately recognizable as the thing she would least enjoy on earth. The second: a fancy restaurant, the kind with hushed rooms and intimidating menus, which she’d described as “beautiful and correct and not me at all.”

Both times she’d told him, honestly and without cruelty, what hadn’t worked.

The third year he’d gotten it right.

No party. No restaurant. He’d driven her two hours to a coastline she’d mentioned once, in passing, in a conversation about a childhood trip she’d loved. They’d eaten sandwiches on the rocks and walked along the shore for four hours in the wind and found a terrible little café for tea and driven back in the dark listening to the playlist she always put on road trips.

“How did you know?” Clara asked, somewhere on the drive back, her feet up on the dashboard, entirely happy.

“I paid attention to the first two years,” Remy said simply. “You told me. Not all at once, but over time.”

“I thought you might try the restaurant again. Better version.”

“The restaurant was my idea of a birthday, not yours.” He glanced at her. “I wanted to get yours right this time.”

The third year had been six years ago. He’d gotten every birthday right since.

Learning someone, she thought, isn’t a single act of understanding. It’s a willingness to get it wrong, hear the truth about why, and try again the next time with what you’ve learned.

Has your partner gotten something meaningfully wrong and then made the effort to understand why — and tried again? What did that effort feel like?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
