The “Just One More Chapter” Romance Books We Blame for Our Sleep Problems

Tomorrow-you would like a word. Tonight-you does not care.

Bestie, it’s 11:07 p.m.

You’re going to read one chapter. Very mature. Very responsible. Look at you respecting your sleep schedule. Then somebody kisses somebody they absolutely should not be kissing.

Suddenly it’s 12:43 a.m., your Kindle battery is at 14%, and you’ve begun calculating whether five hours and seventeen minutes technically qualifies as sleep.

We’ve all been there.

So what makes a romance book completely destroy our ability to put it down?

The Tension Has to Be Just Cruel Enough

Give me two people who immediately communicate their feelings, establish healthy boundaries and enter a mutually fulfilling relationship by Chapter Four and I will be delighted for them.

I will also probably go to bed. Romance needs tension.

Maybe they’re enemies. Maybe they’re pretending not to be attracted to each other. Maybe they’re friends who haven’t realised everyone else already knows they’re in love.

Whatever the reason, there needs to be something standing between I want you and finally.

That’s what creates the dreaded One More Chapter.

We aren’t staying awake because we have poor time-management skills.

We’re conducting important research.

Banter Is Basically Reader Caffeine

A hero can be gorgeous. He can be rich. He can own approximately 73 percent of Manhattan, as romance billionaires apparently do.

But if he cannot banter?

Bedtime.

Give me characters who challenge each other. Give me teasing, ridiculous arguments and conversations where both people clearly want to kiss but have inexplicably decided sarcasm is the appropriate response. Chemistry lives in dialogue long before anybody removes clothing. Although eventually removing clothing certainly doesn’t hurt.

Then Someone Almost Kisses Someone

Authors know exactly what we’re doing here. The hand brushes the waist. They stand slightly too close. Somebody looks at somebody’s mouth. And then…

Nothing.

Chapter ends.

Excuse me?

This is psychological warfare.

Naturally you turn the page.

This is also exactly the kind of romantic tension I love writing. My Curves to Own series books are contemporary romances for readers who enjoy chemistry, heat and characters who insist on making us wait just long enough to become personally invested in whether they finally get naked.

I apologise for nothing.

Spice Works Better When We Actually Care

I’m going to risk having my Romance Author Membership revoked here:

Spice alone doesn’t keep me awake. I need to care first. Give me tension. Give me vulnerability. Make me understand why these two people getting together matters.

Then give me the bedroom door wide open.

That’s when a spicy chapter stops being “well, they’re having sex now” and becomes PUT THAT PHONE DOWN, NOBODY SPEAK TO ME.

There is a difference.

The Real Problem Is the 90% Mark

Experienced romance readers know. Everything is suspiciously happy. They’ve finally admitted their feelings. We still have 70 pages left.

Bestie.

Something terrible is coming.

Now we’re trapped.

Because nobody with a functioning nervous system can close the Kindle immediately after The Misunderstanding, The Secret, The Ex, The Betrayal or whatever fresh nonsense these fictional people have created for themselves.

And this is how 1 a.m. becomes 2 a.m.

Choose Your Sleep Destroyer Responsibly

If you’ve got an early morning, perhaps don’t begin the final third of a romance novel at bedtime.

I say this as someone who understands perfectly well that neither of us is going to follow that advice.

And if you’re currently looking for your next irresponsible evening decision, you can find Curves to Own, the rest of my Curves romances and my paranormal romance books at SoniaMRompoti.com.

Consider this your warning.

Not an effective warning, obviously.

But legally, I feel better.

FAQ: Addictive Romance Books

Why are romance books so hard to put down?

Strong romantic tension, emotional investment, short chapters and unresolved conflict create natural reasons to keep reading because we want the emotional payoff.

What makes a romance book addictive?

Chemistry, banter, compelling characters, escalating tension and good pacing usually matter more than spice alone.

Do romance books need spice to be addictive?

Not at all. Slow burns and closed-door romances can be incredibly addictive when the emotional and romantic tension is strong.

What should I read if I like curvy-girl romance?

My Curves romance books feature curvy heroines, chemistry and plenty of romantic tension. You can browse the series at SoniaMRompoti.com.

Now go to bed.

Actually…

One chapter.

What’s the worst that could happen?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
