The Renovation

They’d renovated the kitchen over a three-month period that tested every aspect of their compatibility as a couple.

Not because they’d argued about tiles, or budget, or whether the island was worth the disruption. Those were ordinary disagreements, easily resolved. What had tested them was simply the sustained close proximity of living in chaos together — the dust everywhere, the cooking done on a single camping stove in the living room, the evenings spent eating takeout on the floor because the table was covered in samples.

It was the floor evenings that Cass thought about afterward.

She’d expected to hate them. She’d expected the disruption to breed resentment, the discomfort to erode patience. Instead, something had softened — some performance of domesticity they’d both been unconsciously maintaining in the proper rooms, at the proper table. On the floor, eating noodles from containers, with no good lighting and nowhere comfortable to sit, they’d just talked. For weeks, every night, easier and more honestly than they had in months.

“We should keep eating on the floor,” she told Luca, the first night the kitchen was done, the two of them standing in it trying to remember how to use it.

He looked at her. “The new kitchen is literally right here.”

“I know. I just liked the floor version.”

He looked at the floor. Then at her. Then he sat down on it, back against the new cabinets, and held up his takeout container.

“We kept the camping stove,” he said. “For the garden.”

“Not just for the garden?”

“Not just for the garden.”

The disruptions we survive together, she thought, often leave behind something unexpected — a version of each other we wouldn’t have found in the comfortable rooms.

She sat down beside him. They ate on the floor.

Was there a period of disruption or difficulty in your relationship that, in hindsight, brought you closer than the easy times had?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
