They’d been married for forty-one years, and the question people always asked — usually young people, usually at weddings, usually slightly desperate for reassurance — was some version of: how do you make it last?
Margit had stopped giving the easy answers years ago. The easy answers were true but insufficient: communication, compromise, shared values. All real. None of it captured the actual texture of four decades.
“You stop trying to make it the same as it was,” she told her granddaughter now, the two of them sitting on the porch while Lukas napped inside, his afternoon ritual for the last fifteen years at least. “That’s the part nobody warns you about. The marriage you have at twenty-five isn’t the marriage you have at sixty-five. If you keep expecting the first one, you’ll think you’ve lost something. You haven’t lost it. It became something else.”
“What did it become?”
Margit considered the question properly. “Quieter,” she said eventually. “Less urgent. We don’t need to prove anything to each other anymore — we’ve already proven it, over and over, for forty years. What’s left is just… companionship. Which sounds boring when you’re your age. It isn’t boring. It’s the reward for everything that came before it.”
Her granddaughter looked unconvinced, the way young people often did, still wanting the passionate version to be the permanent one.
“Will it feel like enough?” she asked. “The quiet kind?”
“It feels like everything,” Margit said simply. “I’ve had grand love and I’ve had quiet love, and I’ll tell you honestly — by the time you’ve earned the quiet kind, you understand it was always what you were actually working toward.”
Inside, Lukas woke from his nap and called her name, the same way he had for forty-one years.
She got up to answer it, the way she always did.
✦ Today’s Reflection
How do you imagine love changing as you grow older together — and does the “quieter” version feel like loss, or like an earned reward?
Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
