September means back to school, which means something very exciting happens to parents everywhere: we spend an absolutely ridiculous amount of our lives waiting in the car.
Ten minutes until pickup. Twenty minutes outside ballet. Somehow forty-five minutes because you arrived early to get a decent parking spot and now moving the car would mean surrendering territory.
Bestie, this is reading time.
But there is one minor complication. I want romance. I want tension. I would not object to some spice. What I don’t necessarily want is another parent glancing through my car window and immediately understanding precisely what Chapter 17 is doing to me.
So I went looking for books that are sexy, addictive and reasonably safe for public consumption.

1. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
If you like smart women, STEM, fake dating and sexual tension that keeps quietly escalating while everyone pretends everything is perfectly normal, start here.
It’s easy to pick up and put down, which matters when your reading session can end abruptly with a child opening the passenger door and immediately demanding a snack.
Car-Line Verdict: Flirty, funny and deceptive enough to look respectable.
2. The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary
Tiffy and Leon share an apartment and a bed, but not at the same time.
Obviously this arrangement remains completely uncomplicated and nobody develops feelings.
Please.
This is more warm and romantic than scorching, but it’s incredibly easy to dip into during small pockets of time. The unusual structure and short sections make it particularly friendly when you only have fifteen minutes before the school gates open.
Car-Line Verdict: Safe enough for broad daylight. Still gives you something to swoon about.
3. Icebreaker by Hannah Grace
Now we’re turning the temperature up.
Figure skater. Hockey player. Forced proximity. Attraction. Spice.
Icebreaker is one of those books where the cover isn’t screaming HELLO, I CONTAIN SEX, which makes it considerably easier to read while surrounded by respectable parents discussing tomorrow’s spelling test.
Inside?
Different situation.
Car-Line Verdict: Cover-safe. Content considerably less innocent. Keep an eye on the clock.
4. Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert
Fake dating with actual chemistry is one of romance’s greatest contributions to civilisation.
Dani doesn’t particularly want romance. Zaf is considerably more romantic than she anticipated. Their fake relationship starts becoming inconveniently real, and we all sit there pretending we didn’t know exactly where this was going.
It’s funny, sexy and emotionally satisfying without requiring you to memorise a twelve-generation magical bloodline between pickups.
Car-Line Verdict: Excellent exhausted-parent-brain material with enough heat to make waiting considerably less annoying.
5. Book Lovers by Emily Henry
This is for the reader who wants banter and chemistry more than outright smut.
Nora is a literary agent. Charlie is an editor. They already know each other.
They are not particularly fond of each other.
You see where we’re going.
It’s witty, romantic and wonderfully bookish, which means you can sit outside school reading about publishing professionals aggressively failing not to fall for each other while looking extremely intellectual.
Nobody needs to know.
Car-Line Verdict: Very publicly respectable. Privately delicious.
6. Curves to Own by Sonia Rompoti
Did you really think I was going to send you into the school pickup line with everybody else’s fictional men and leave mine at home?
Absolutely not.
If you want contemporary romance with curves, chemistry, heat and the kind of relationship tension that makes twenty minutes sitting in a parked car considerably more interesting, Curves to Own is where I’d send you.
This is also the joy of reading digitally. Your Kindle could contain a cookbook.
It could contain Tolstoy.

Here’s what I’ve learned about parent reading: the best school-run book isn’t necessarily short.
It needs to be easy to return to.
Short chapters help. Strong characters help. Romance helps enormously because you’re following an emotional thread rather than trying to remember which kingdom invaded Western Something-or-Other seventy pages ago.
And most importantly, read something that’s yours.
School season can become spectacularly child-centred. Uniforms, activities, homework, pickups, lunches, schedules.
Those fifteen minutes in the car?
Keep them.
