Because apparently the universe forgot to include unlimited spoons with our witch starter pack.
Okay, come sit with me for a minute, because we need to discuss one of my least favourite myths about witchcraft: that you need to be actively doing something impressive for your practice to count.
You know the aesthetic.
Candles everywhere. Elaborate altar. Fresh herbs. Beautiful handwritten grimoire. Moon water prepared precisely on schedule. Somebody appears to be wandering barefoot through a forest at sunrise despite having work in forty-five minutes.
Lovely.
Meanwhile, you wanted to do a ritual tonight but getting out of bed currently feels like a side quest.
Your witchcraft still counts.
Actually, this is exactly when I think we need it most.
Witchcraft Was Never Supposed to Become Another Chore
The moment your spiritual practice starts making you feel guilty, we’ve got a problem.
Ritual can be grounding, meaningful, comforting and deeply personal. But if you’re exhausted, burned out, overwhelmed, disabled, neurodivergent or simply having a spectacularly rubbish day, an elaborate practice can become another demand.
And we already have enough of those.
Your practice should adapt to you. Not the other way around.
If today’s capacity is lighting one candle, that’s the ritual. If it’s holding your favourite crystal while lying down, that’s the ritual. If it’s thinking, I would like some peace today, while drinking coffee?
Bestie, we’re counting it.
Try the Thirty-Second Intention
Here’s one of my favourite ridiculously small practices.
Before you drink your morning coffee, tea or water, pause.
Choose one word for the day.
Maybe calm.
Maybe courage.
Maybe focus.
Maybe boundaries, because Brenda has already emailed twice and it’s 8:14 a.m.
Hold your drink for a few seconds and deliberately connect it with that intention. Then drink it. No special ingredients. No equipment. No ceremonial robes. You have taken an ordinary behaviour and given it deliberate meaning.
That is ritual.
Your Bed Can Be Sacred Space
I feel strangely passionate about this one.
Why have we decided spiritual practice must happen somewhere else? If you’re stuck in bed, your bed becomes the ritual space. Put one meaningful object nearby. A crystal. A photograph. A book. A dried leaf. Jewellery. Something you’ve found outside. Something that reminds you of who you are.
You don’t need an altar table.
You need something that means something to you.
Look at it. Hold it if you want. Spend thirty seconds connecting with whatever it represents.
Done.
Nobody from Witch Headquarters is coming to inspect the furniture.
Borrow Magic From Something You’re Already Doing
Low-energy witchcraft becomes much easier when you stop adding tasks and start attaching meaning to things you’re doing anyway.
Showering? Imagine the water washing away whatever you don’t want to carry into tomorrow.
Opening the curtains? Take ten seconds to notice the light and mark the beginning of your day.
Putting moisturiser on? Treat it as an act of care rather than another task your body requires.
Making dinner? Stir an intention into it.
Taking medication? Make that moment about choosing to care for your body.
The action doesn’t have to change.
Your relationship with the action does.
That’s where the magic lives.
Tiny Rituals Can Still Help Your Brain
There’s also a psychological reason I like small rituals.
When life feels chaotic, predictable little behaviours can give us moments of structure and control. Intention-setting makes us pause and identify what we actually need. Sensory rituals can bring our attention back to what’s happening right now.
That doesn’t make witchcraft therapy.
And therapy doesn’t need to become witchcraft.
They can simply overlap in useful places.
As a mental-health professional and a witch, that’s the intersection I’m much more interested in than pretending a crystal can cure anxiety.
I love my crystals.
I also enjoy evidence.
We contain multitudes.
Stop Measuring Your Practice by Your Best Days
This might be the biggest shift.
Don’t build a spiritual practice designed exclusively for the version of you who slept eight hours, has no pain, has nothing urgent happening and inexplicably possesses executive function.
Build one that still exists on Tuesday when everything has gone sideways.
Maybe your full-moon ritual sometimes lasts an hour.
And sometimes you look at the moon through your bedroom window and whisper, “Girl, same.”
Both belong to you.
This Is Why I Wrote Easy Magic
Easy Magic for When You Can’t Get Out of Bed exists because I wanted witchcraft that meets us exactly there.
Not after we become more productive. Not when we’re feeling better. Not once we’ve cleaned the house and assembled the appropriate collection of herbs.
Now.
It’s for low-spoons witches, tired witches, disabled witches, neurodivergent witches and anyone who wants magic to remain part of their life without making their life harder.
You can find it with my other witchcraft and mental-health books at SoniaMRompoti.com.
FAQ: Low-Energy Witchcraft
Can I practise witchcraft without an altar?
Absolutely. Altars are tools, not requirements. Your practice can happen in bed, outside, in the shower, over your morning coffee or anywhere meaningful to you.
What is low-spoons witchcraft?
Low-spoons witchcraft adapts rituals and practices for limited physical, emotional or executive-function capacity. The goal is accessibility, not performance.
Can a ritual really last thirty seconds?
Yes. Length doesn’t determine meaning. A deliberate breath, intention or tiny symbolic action can still function as a personal ritual.
What if I keep forgetting to practise witchcraft?
Attach your practice to something you already do. Coffee, medication, showering, bedtime and opening your curtains can all become cues for tiny rituals.
What book can help me practise witchcraft when I’m exhausted?
I wrote Easy Magic for When You Can’t Get Out of Bed specifically for those days. You can find it at SoniaMRompoti.com.
Your practice does not disappear when your capacity changes.
Some days magic is candles, herbs and a beautiful ritual.
Some days it’s lying under a blanket, holding a cup of tea and deciding you’re going to try again tomorrow.
Personally?
I think both are pretty damn magical.
Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
