The Practice Fight

They’d had exactly one real fight in nine years, early on, about something neither of them could fully reconstruct afterward. It had frightened them both — not the disagreement itself, but the unfamiliar heat of it, the realization that they were capable of hurting each other if they weren’t careful.

So they’d done something unusual. They’d sat down a week later, calm, and built rules together. Not rules for avoiding conflict — they both agreed that was unrealistic, even undesirable — but rules for fighting fairly. No raised voices after the first warning. No bringing up old grievances mid-argument. A mandatory pause if either of them said the word “stop,” no questions asked, resumed only when both felt ready.

“It feels strange,” Halima had said at the time, “planning how to fight before we’ve even really needed to.”

“That’s exactly why we should do it now,” Tobias said. “When we’re calm enough to be fair to each other about it.”

Nine years later, the rules had been used perhaps a dozen times — never elaborately, never dramatically, just quietly invoked when a conversation started running hot. The “stop” word had been said maybe four times total, and each time, true to the agreement, the conversation had paused immediately, resumed an hour later, calmer.

Tonight, mid-disagreement about something genuinely minor — whose turn it was to handle an irritating piece of paperwork — Halima felt her voice start to climb and caught herself.

“Stop,” she said.

Tobias stopped immediately, mid-sentence, no argument.

They sat in silence for a moment, the anger still present but contained, like something held carefully rather than let loose.

“Thank you,” she said, eventually.

“That’s what it’s for.”

Love that lasts isn’t love without conflict. It’s love that built the scaffolding for conflict in advance, so that no disagreement ever has to threaten the whole structure.

Do you and your partner have any agreed-upon rules or rituals for handling conflict — and if not, what’s one you might want to build together?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
