The Empty Chair

For the first six months after her mother died, Odette set the table for three without thinking, then quietly removed the extra plate before anyone noticed.

Anyone except Hassan, who always noticed.

He never said anything about it directly — never made it a topic, never asked if she was okay in the way that demanded an answer. He simply, on the evenings he noticed the extra plate, set himself an extra glass of water at the same place instead of clearing it away entirely. A small adjustment. The chair stayed occupied, technically, even if only by a glass that no one would drink from.

It took her months to notice what he was doing.

“You don’t have to do that,” she told him eventually, watching him fill the third glass again.

“I know.”

“It’s just a habit. From muscle memory. It doesn’t mean anything.”

“I know that too.” He set the glass down anyway. “But if some part of you is setting the table for her, I’d rather there be something there than an empty space you have to clear away alone.”

She’d cried then, properly, for the first time in weeks, and he’d simply moved his chair closer and let her.

The glass of water became its own quiet ritual after that — not maudlin, not heavy, just present. Some evenings she barely registered it. Other evenings she’d look at it and feel the specific, complicated comfort of grief being witnessed without being forced into words.

Grief doesn’t always need solving, she’d learned. Sometimes it just needs someone willing to sit beside the empty chair with you, instead of insisting it be cleared.

✦  Today’s Reflection

Has your partner ever made space for your grief without trying to fix it or rush you past it? What did that teach you about being truly supported?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
