The Translation of Tired

She had four different kinds of tired, and after nine years, he could tell them apart without her saying a word.

There was work-tired, which wanted silence and a specific blanket. There was emotionally-tired, which wanted to be asked a direct question rather than left alone. There was the-world-is-too-much tired, which wanted distraction — something funny on the television, nothing serious. And there was the rare, dangerous fourth kind, the one that had only happened a handful of times in their years together, that wanted nothing at all except for someone to simply stay in the room without expectation.

Tonight, when she came in and dropped her bag by the door without her usual commentary on the day, Andrej looked up once, assessed her in under three seconds, and didn’t ask anything.

He just turned the television to something light, made space on the couch, and waited.

Yara sat down beside him, not speaking, and after a moment put her head on his shoulder.

“This is the bad one,” she said eventually, quietly. “Stay-tired.”

“I know,” he said. “I clocked it from the door.”

“How?”

“You didn’t complain about anything yet. That’s always the tell.”

She laughed despite herself, a small surprised sound, and felt something in her chest loosen slightly. He didn’t ask what had happened. He didn’t try to fix anything. He simply adjusted the volume slightly lower, settled in beside her, and let the silence exist exactly as long as it needed to.

To be known this specifically — not loved in the abstract, but read fluently, moment to moment — was its own peculiar kind of safety. The kind that didn’t require explanation to be honored.

She fell asleep on his shoulder before the show ended. He didn’t move.

Does your partner know the different “kinds” of tired or overwhelmed you carry — and do you know theirs?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
