He’d never raised his voice for himself. Not once, in the eight years she’d known him — not at bad service, not at unfair treatment, not even when he probably should have.
He raised it for her, though. Exactly once, memorably, at a dinner where her brother had made an offhand comment about her career choices that landed somewhere between teasing and cruel, the kind of remark families specialize in and call humor.
Aurelio had set down his glass, very calmly, and said: “I think that’s enough,” in a tone none of them had heard from him before.
The table had gone quiet. Her brother had looked startled, then sheepish.
It wasn’t dramatic. He hadn’t shouted, hadn’t made a scene, hadn’t done anything that would have embarrassed her in front of her family. He’d simply, clearly, drawn a line — calm and immovable — and the conversation had moved on within a minute.
Sabine thought about it for weeks afterward. Not because it had been a big moment, but because of what it revealed: that he would let almost anything slide for his own sake, absorb almost any slight without comment, but the moment it touched her, something in him became entirely unwilling to stay quiet.
“You never do that for yourself,” she told him later, in the car.
“I don’t need defending,” he said. “I can absorb most things.”
“And me?”
He glanced at her. “You shouldn’t have to absorb anything. Not if I’m there.”
Protection, she thought, isn’t about control. It’s about where someone draws their own personal line — and the fact that, for him, that line had relocated entirely around her without him even noticing it happen.
✦ Today’s Reflection
Has your partner ever defended you in a way that surprised you — quietly, calmly, but completely?
Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
