The Photograph Wall

Every year on their anniversary, they added one photograph to the hallway wall. Just one — chosen carefully, sometimes after genuine debate, meant to represent the entire year in a single frame.

It had started accidentally. Their first anniversary, neither of them had planned anything elaborate, and Theo had simply printed a photo from a weekend trip and hung it where the hallway had been bare. The second year, Lucienne had added one beside it without much ceremony. By the fifth year it had become unmistakably a tradition, with actual deliberation behind each choice.

This year’s selection had taken three weeks of mild disagreement.

“The hospital photo,” Lucienne said, for the fourth time. “It has to be the hospital photo.”

“It’s blurry. You look terrible. I look worse.”

“Our son is eleven hours old in that photo. I don’t care how we look.”

Theo looked at the photo again — the two of them gray with exhaustion, their newborn a furious red bundle between them, the whole frame slightly tilted because a nurse had taken it in a hurry. It was, objectively, an unflattering photograph.

It was also, he had to admit, the truest thing that had happened to them all year.

“Fine,” he said. “The hospital photo.”

They hung it that evening, ninth in the row now, a small unglamorous chronicle of their entire life together stretching down the hallway — vacations and a small wedding and one very bad haircut Lucienne still maintained was a style choice, and now this: two exhausted, radiant people and the son who had rearranged everything.

A marriage isn’t measured in its highlight reel. It’s measured in which moments you choose, again and again, to keep — even the blurry ones, even the unflattering ones, especially those.

✦  Today’s Reflection

If you had to choose just one photograph to represent this past year of your relationship, which one would it be — and why that one?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
