He kept a smooth gray stone in his pocket. Had for as long as she’d known him — and before that too, apparently, since childhood, a habit from a grandfather who’d given him the original and told him to rub it when his thoughts got too loud.
Bea had thought it was sweet, slightly odd, entirely his.
She hadn’t expected to need one herself until the year her business nearly failed — eighteen months of quiet, grinding anxiety that she hid well during the day and unraveled from at 3am, unable to explain even to herself what exactly she was afraid of.
He noticed anyway. He always did.
One evening he pressed something small and cool into her palm without explanation. She looked down: a second stone, smaller than his, smooth in the same worn way.
“I found it on our trip to the coast,” Lawrence said. “Two summers ago. I’ve been carrying it since, getting it the right kind of smooth.”
“You’ve had this for two years?”
“I didn’t know when you’d need it. I just wanted it ready.”
She held it now, mid-3am-spiral, rubbing her thumb across its worn surface the way she’d watched him do a thousand times. It didn’t fix anything. The business worries didn’t disappear. But there was something in the weight of it, in the proof that he’d anticipated a need she hadn’t named yet and prepared for it years in advance, that made the spiral loosen its grip slightly.
Some love is reactive — showing up exactly when asked. But the deepest kind is anticipatory: quietly preparing, for years if necessary, for a need you haven’t spoken yet.
She fell back asleep with the stone still in her hand.
✦ Today’s Reflection
Has your partner ever prepared for a need of yours before you even knew you’d have it? What did that teach you about how closely they pay attention?
Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
