The Late Shift

She worked nights. Had for years, long before he came along, and she’d assumed any relationship would eventually buckle under the strange architecture of her schedule.

Idris hadn’t buckled. He’d rearranged.

He couldn’t change his own hours — a normal nine-to-five, immovable — but he’d quietly shifted everything else. Dinner became breakfast, eaten together at 7am before she left for her shift. Their version of a Friday night was a Tuesday morning, the two of them at the kitchen table with eggs and the specific exhausted tenderness of someone who’d stayed awake on purpose just to share a meal.

He’d never made it a sacrifice out loud. He’d just done it, consistently, for three years.

Tonight, before her shift, she found him already at the table, eggs done, her travel mug filled.

“You didn’t have to get up early again,” Naomi said, the same thing she said most mornings, knowing already what he’d say back.

“I wanted to see you before you go.” He pushed her plate toward her. “We’ve got twenty minutes.”

“You have work in an hour.”

“I have eggs now. Work can wait twenty minutes.”

She sat down, suddenly aware — as she sometimes was, in ordinary moments like this — of the quiet scale of what he gave her. Not grand. Not occasional. Just every single morning, an act of choosing her schedule over his own comfort, again and again, without resentment.

Love, when it’s built to last, doesn’t insist the other person adapt. It learns to bend itself around the shape of someone’s actual life.

“Twenty minutes,” she agreed, and reached for the eggs.

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
