Her mother didn’t speak English. He’d learned forty careful phrases before meeting her for the first time, written phonetically on his hand in pen because he was too nervous to trust his memory.
Ingrid had warned him it wasn’t necessary. Her mother had lived in the country for thirty years; she managed fine with gestures and patience and the occasional translated sentence from Ingrid herself.
He’d done it anyway.
He’d shown up to dinner and greeted her mother in halting, badly-accented Swedish, and her mother — a famously unsentimental woman — had gone uncharacteristically quiet for a moment before laughing, delighted, correcting his pronunciation immediately and without mercy.
“You didn’t have to do that,” Ingrid told him afterward, in the car.
“I wanted to try.”
“You butchered half of it.”
“She corrected me eleven times. I counted.” He smiled at the road ahead. “I’ll get better.”
He did get better, slowly, over the years — never fluent, never close to it, but capable now of a real conversation with her mother that didn’t require Ingrid as an intermediary. He still got things wrong. Her mother still corrected him, now with the comfortable bluntness of someone who’d stopped being a stranger to him long ago.
Ingrid watched them now, mother and partner, arguing cheerfully over a word he’d mispronounced for the hundredth time, and felt something settle in her chest that she didn’t have a name for beyond gratitude.
He hadn’t just learned to love her. He’d learned to love the people who’d made her — clumsily, persistently, on purpose.
That, she thought, is its own kind of vow. Not just choosing the person, but choosing everyone who came before them too.
✦ Today’s Reflection
How has your partner made an effort to connect with the people who matter most to you — and have you told them what that effort means?
Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
