He proposed badly the first time. Deliberately.

Oskar had planned the real proposal for weeks — the right restaurant, the right ring, the right words rehearsed until they felt natural. But three days before, lying in bed, he’d had a sudden and specific fear: that the real moment would feel like a performance, too polished, too far from the actual texture of their life together.

So he did a practice run.

“Marry me,” he said, completely deadpan, while she stood at the stove burning grilled cheese.

Anneliese turned around, spatula in hand, unimpressed. “We’re out of bread for a second sandwich.”

“I’m serious. Will you marry me?”

“You’re ridiculous. Move, you’re standing in the smoke detector’s path.”

He didn’t move the ring out, didn’t kneel, didn’t do any of it properly. He just stood there grinning while she swatted smoke away from the ceiling, and she eventually swatted him too, lightly, on the arm, still laughing.

Three days later, at the restaurant, with the ring and the right words and the careful planning, he asked her properly. She said yes, crying, completely overwhelmed.

But it was the kitchen moment she actually told people about. The badly burnt grilled cheese, the absurd timing, the spatula still in her hand.

“Why’d you do the kitchen one first?” she asked him later.

“Because I wanted you to know I meant it even when it was ridiculous,” he said. “Not just when it was beautiful. Both. Always both.”

The grandest declarations matter. But it’s the ones offered in the middle of burnt grilled cheese — unplanned, unpolished, completely sincere — that prove a love is built to survive the unglamorous days too.
