The Long Way Home

He always took the long way home from the station. She’d noticed it years ago and never asked why, assuming it was about traffic, or habit, or nothing at all.

It was none of those things.

She found out by accident, walking with him one evening when his phone died and he had to navigate by memory instead of habit, narrating the turns out loud without realizing he was doing it.

“And then we cut through here,” he said, “because it goes past the bakery, and the light’s good around this time, and—” He stopped himself.

“And what?”

He looked faintly caught out. “And I like seeing what’s in the window. They change the display.” A pause. “It’s nothing.”

“You’ve been taking the long way home for the bakery window?”

“For the light,” he corrected. “The bakery’s incidental.”

Solène didn’t push it further that evening. But she started paying attention after that — to the way he slowed near certain windows, the specific blocks he favored, the small private aesthetics of a man she’d assumed had no interest in beauty for its own sake.

He noticed things. He always had. He simply never narrated it, never made it a personality, never needed anyone to know that he found the world this quietly remarkable.

She started taking the long way with him on purpose now, on the evenings she could. Not because the route was better. Because she wanted to see what he saw.

“This window’s new,” he said tonight, slowing slightly outside the bakery.

“I like it.”

“Me too.” He glanced at her. “I like that you noticed I’d notice.”

To love someone fully is to learn the unspoken aesthetics they carry — the quiet, private ways they find the world beautiful, that they never thought worth mentioning until someone cared enough to ask.

✦  Today’s Reflection

What is something your partner finds beautiful or interesting that they’ve never explicitly told you about — something you’ve only learned by watching closely?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
