She’d given him a spare key three weeks into dating, mostly as a joke.
“In case of emergency,” she’d said, dropping it into his palm with the kind of bravado that meant she was terrified of what it implied.
He hadn’t used it for a year. Not once, not even when she’d told him to let himself in, not even when she was running late and texted *just come up*. He always knocked. Always waited. The key sat on his ring like a held breath.
Then her father died, suddenly, on a Wednesday, and she didn’t call anyone. She went home, locked the door, and didn’t answer her phone for six hours.
He used the key.
Mireille heard it turn in the lock from where she sat on the kitchen floor, and didn’t move. She heard his footsteps stop in the doorway.
“I’m not going to ask if you’re okay,” Theo said, lowering himself to the floor beside her, not touching her yet. “I already know you’re not.”
“You used the key.”
“You needed someone to.”
She finally looked at him. He didn’t look proud of himself, or relieved, or like he’d done something brave. He just looked like a person who had weighed her privacy against her pain and chosen, this once, to come in anyway.
“How did you know?”
“I didn’t,” he admitted. “I called six times. You always answer by the third.”
A year of patience, she realized. A year of waiting outside locked doors because he respected them — and the one time it mattered more to be inside than to be polite, he’d known the difference.
Some kinds of love wait outside the door for as long as it takes. The deepest kind knows exactly when to come in.
She leaned into his shoulder. He put his arm around her and they sat on the kitchen floor while the light moved across the walls.
✦ Today’s Reflection
Is there someone in your life who respects your boundaries so consistently that you’d trust them completely with the one time you needed them to cross one?
Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
The Daily Dose of Romance has moved into its new home! Every day, a fresh FREE romance story will be waiting for you.
