They’d had the argument on a Tuesday, which is why Tuesdays had been vaguely bad for three weeks.
It hadn’t been a large argument. No raised voices, no ultimatums, no dramatic exits. Just a conversation that went wrong somewhere in the middle and left both of them feeling subtracted from.
She’d apologized. He’d apologized. They’d meant them.
But something had been sitting between them — nothing terrible, just a slight wrongness in the air, like a song played half a step flat.
She came home on the fourth Tuesday to find him in the kitchen making the soup she particularly liked, the one he only made on weekends because it took time.
“It’s Tuesday,” she said.
“I know.”
“That takes three hours.”
“I left work early.” He stirred the pot. “Sit down. It’s almost ready.”
She sat at the kitchen table and watched him. He moved around the kitchen with the particular efficiency of someone who has been doing something for a while, focused and unhurried. He didn’t explain. He didn’t make the soup into a speech.
Reconciliation, she understood, doesn’t always need words. Sometimes it’s three hours in a kitchen on a Tuesday. Sometimes it’s saying: I know the thing between us has been slightly wrong, and I want to make it right, and this is how I know how to say that.
He set the bowl in front of her.
She took his hand before he could move away, and held it.
“Thank you,” she said.
“Tuesdays will be fine,” he said.
And they were.
✦ Today’s Reflection
How do you and your partner return to each other after a disagreement — and is there a gesture or ritual that means “I’m coming back”?
Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
