She still found them in her pockets.
Seven years and they’d tapered off — from the daily ones early on, in the slightly embarrassing pink-cloud phase, to the occasional ones now. But they still appeared. Inside coat pockets before winter trips. Tucked into laptops on work travel. Under her coffee cup on difficult mornings.
Always short. He was not a florid man. They said things like *you’ve got this* or *home by seven* or just *hi*, once, on a day she’d told him she was struggling.
*Hi* had been exactly right.
This one had appeared in the pocket of her jacket: a small folded square that said, in his handwriting, *still choosing you. every day. on purpose.*
She was standing outside in the cold when she found it, between one meeting and another, with a very small window of time to feel anything before the day reclaimed her.
She read it twice. Folded it back up. Put it in her pocket.
He’d never said anything like it out loud — that wasn’t quite his way. But he’d written it down and put it somewhere she’d find it, which was its own kind of bravery.
Love is a choice, Vera had always believed that. But she’d thought of it as a daily decision made inside large moments. What she hadn’t understood — until him — was how continuously it was being made. In small, quiet, deliberate ways, all day long.
She texted him: *found it.*
He replied three minutes later: *good.*
She smiled and went back inside.
