The Commute

He called her on his commute home every Tuesday.

Not because anything happened on Tuesdays. Not because of any plan or agreement. Just because Tuesday was the day he’d first called her, three years ago, when they’d been new and finding their rhythm, and it had become a thing without becoming a *thing*.

The call usually lasted the exact length of his walk from the office to the station — about twelve minutes. Sometimes less if she was in the middle of something. Sometimes more if the train was delayed and they both had time.

They didn’t talk about anything important, as a rule. They talked about the small things: what she’d made for lunch, a colleague of his who’d said something funny, whether they needed to buy more olive oil, a book she’d started and wasn’t sure about yet.

It was, Rosa thought, one of her favorite parts of Tuesday.

She was walking home herself when her phone rang — twelve minutes before she expected it.

“You’re early,” she said.

“Left early.” She heard the street sound behind him. “Good day or bad day?”

“Complicated day.”

“Tell me.”

She told him about the meeting that had gone sideways, and the email she hadn’t answered yet, and the strange melancholy she’d had since noon that she couldn’t explain. He listened without interrupting, which was one of his best qualities.

Relationships, she’d learned, are maintained in small daily moments, not saved up for and expressed in big ones. The Tuesday calls, accumulated over three years, added up to something enormous.

“Olive oil,” he said, when she’d finished. “We definitely need olive oil.”

“I know,” she said, and walked the rest of the way home smiling.

What daily or weekly ritual has formed naturally in your relationship — and have you ever stopped to appreciate it?

Love my writing? You can grab my books directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
