People often ask where authors get ideas.
The answer is simultaneously everywhere and nowhere.
Sometimes an idea arrives fully formed. Sometimes it takes months. Sometimes it appears while you’re doing something completely unrelated and your brain decides, “Excellent. Now seems like the perfect time to invent emotional suffering.”
Here are a few places story ideas have found me.
In Supermarkets
Nothing inspires romance quite like trying to choose between two brands of pasta and suddenly wondering:
“What if these two strangers reached for the same box?”
A completely normal thought process…indeed!
During Therapy Training
Psychology teaches you something important: Everyone has a story. Everyone has wounds. Everyone has patterns.
Many of my characters begin with emotional questions rather than plot questions.
What are they protecting?
What are they afraid of?
What do they believe about themselves that isn’t true?
The romance grows from there.
Walking My Dog
Dogs have an impressive ability to force humans outdoors. They also provide excellent opportunities for eavesdropping….. Not intentionally. Mostly.
People reveal fascinating things when they think nobody is listening.
Random Notes Written at 2 AM
Past-midnight Sonia is both a genius and a menace…in case you hadn’t noticed.
Occasionally I wake up to discover notes such as:
- “Witch accidentally turns into mountain lion during argument.”
- “What if revenge becomes love?”
- “Emotionally unavailable billionaire but make it worse.”
Thank you, past-midnight Sonia.
Very helpful.
The Truth
Most books don’t begin with plots. They begin with feelings.
A question.
A moment.
A fear.
A hope.
A single sentence that refuses to leave.
Everything else gets built around that. Which means somewhere right now there’s probably another future book waiting quietly in a notebook, a voice memo, or a random note on my phone.
Hopefully one that lets the characters make better decisions.
Although history suggests otherwise.
Love these books? You can grab them directly from my website or through my Amazon author page. When you purchase from my website, a larger portion of the sale goes directly to supporting my writing, allowing me to create more stories, mental health resources, and magical guides without relying on algorithms or advertising. You’ll also find exclusive bonuses, free reader gifts, and occasional special offers that aren’t always available elsewhere. If Amazon is your preferred bookstore, that’s perfectly fine too. Either way, thank you for supporting an independent author who spends an unreasonable amount of time talking to fictional people and turning it into books.
