Plants are the new pets!

They say plants are the new pets, and pets are the new children. But how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go?

Well, the shocking news are: your flowers can hear and interact with the environment, just like your pets can. They can’t talk back, but in a way, they respond.

Tel Aviv University has confirmed, through research, that flowers react to sound and vibration. During the initial experiment, Dr. Lilach Hadany played the sound of honeybees near blossoming flowers, and the flowers increased their nectar sweetness within minutes.

The reasoning remains that they did it to entice honeybees to come closer. The nectar of flowers serves as a food source for insects due to the sugar concentration. While feeding on the nectar or collecting it, insects also pick up pollen on their hair and legs. As a result, plants that respond to the presence of these insects by producing nectar that is even sweeter have a greater chance of successful reproduction.

To take things a step further, when researchers removed the petals from the flowers, they ceased responding to sound and vibration, implying that the petals serve as the plants’ ears.

Using a vibrometer, these theories were further verified, giving rise to the study of phytoacoustics. Of course, we have a long way to go… but we can now confidently declare that plants are the new pets.

    I’ve never considered myself to have green fingers but then I bought a couple of Cacti to brighten up the room, followed by a Venus Fly Trap, more Cacti, a Spider Plant and eventually Ivy for my bedroom. I’d definitely say I’m down the rabbit hole at this point 😂. As somebody who is very allergic to animal fur they’re the perfect pet for me!

      Oh ho ho!! I feel the same way. I catch myself eyeing plants, dangerously much.. and I’m afraid my toddler is coming down the rabbit hole with me… her school is suddenly doing all these seminars on plants and leaves, and seeing them through a microscope, so I feel the universe is pushing us both down this rabbit hole for sure hahaha.. Q: The Venus Fly Trap.. easy to maintain or not??

        Aww I love that your daughter is becoming interested in plants just like you are.
        I’ve found with the Venus Fly Trap that they definitely have specific needs. I think if you do your research and these are met though I’ve found that mine is fairly low maintenance. The main thing I’ve learned is that tap water doesn’t agree with them so they need either rain water or filtered water so I have a bucket outside all the time for mine. Mine is now looking pretty healthy despite me nearly losing it early on. I think I made the mistake of overfeeding it and stressed it out and the majority of it went black. I’ve found that putting it outside and bringing it in at night and letting it catch its own food along with removing the dead traps has brought it back to life and it’s now really pink inside the traps. I have read that they go dormant around November though and look as though they’re dead then so I’d say if you’re thinking about getting one I’d probably wait until Spring or Summer.
